I'm Back!

Oh Geez.....It's been a while since my last post (to say the least).

I'm trying to get back on the "sewing train" after a long Holiday break, but the motivation is being re-directed into my workout regime. I started doing Reformer Pilates last September and I am 100% totally addicted. A few weeks ago I ordered a CoreBody Reformer from Nautilus/Bowflex and have been adding that workout to my routine. Along with the equipment came a recipe book and food journal, so I have been utilizing those guides...and guess what...I lost 2 pounds last week!

Now, my Pilates instructor says "don't worry about what the scale says". I kinda agree with that. The whole goal of Pilates is to increase flexibility and create lean muscle. But at the same time, I need to lose about 20 pounds. And even with running/training for last year's Livestrong 5K, and adding Pilates towards the end of the year, I was still gaining weight. And not the "good muscle weight", more like the jiggly flubbery weight. Last year- I gained 13 lbs.

Most people look at me and say "you look great- you don't need to lose weight!", but the truth is- I'm not happy. This is not the body I want to live in. Going through cancer, chemo, menopause and hormone therapy are all reeking havoc on me.

However- I FINALLY found my BALANCE! I never EVER thought I'd become a calorie counter, but I am, and (for me) it works. Adding core/cardio with the CoreBody Reformer routine is helping me get a good sweat going. I am pushing myself a *tiny bit* more at my Reformer classes by adding a little extra resistance here, and a little less there - in attempts to maximize my efforts. I'm drinking about 6 or so glasses of water each day, and being honest about what I eat.

Survivor Day 2011

On August 18, 2008 I was told that I had cancer.

Today is my Survivor Day.

Today I reflect on the magnitude of my disease and give thanks that I am here to kiss my husband every morning before he goes to work and hug my daughter every night when she goes to bed. That I can visit my friends and family whenever I want. That I can pursue my dreams and make people happy.

Along with all these feeling of thanks, I also have feelings of guilt. Why am I here and Steve not? Why is Mary Ellen gone? Why is 5 year old Gabby having to fight SO HARD. It's hard for me to deal with the emotions that come with being a survivor. I'm not so sure about that whole "greater plan" thing. I think it's a lot more like luck. I'm just fortunate, and I NEVER take that for granted.

So thank you to my Breast Surgeon for giving me a huge hug last week and telling me not to come back for a year. Thank you to my Oncologist for reminding me (once again) how LUCKY I am that we were able to treat my cancer....and for telling me not to come back for 6 months. Thank you to my Plastic Surgeon for being so driven to help me get back everything that I lost. Thank you to my Primary Doctor for giving me hope that there's some combination of prescriptions out there that will help balance my horrid hot flashes. And the biggest thanks of all to my OB/Gyn who was proactive enough to send a 30 year old for a mammogram.

And that's just the beginning! A new color scheme will be finalized this week. And then a brand new SUPER FANCY website and shopping cart service will be customized for us over the next 2 months!

In the meantime the only adjustment that we had to make was to deactivate our credit card processor from the current www website. Our contract was expiring and I did not want to renew it for 1 year and only use it for 2 months. So right now if you shop at www.diaperbagwrangler.com you are only able to pay via Paypal. Once the new website is ready, our new credit card processor will be activated.

CF4L Regretsy Submission

I'll admit it LOUD and PROUD.
I love Regretsy.

However, I'm a "silent lurker". I don't post regularly in the forums or on facebook. But I read EVERYTHING, and I donate items to the April's Army Charity Etsy Shop (which btw- raised like $8K last month - IN ONE WEEK for an artist in need!).

So this Guerrilla Craft Store Uprising started where people were going to craft and hardware stores and spelling out CF4L and other "Regretsy words" (yea- there's a whole secret language) with wooden letters, mailbox decals and things like that ...and taking pictures. So I had my own creative inspiration, and sent this submission to the site.

Hi Helen,

I could not resist a guerrilla CF4L. I make sweet and innocent personalized toddler / little kids aprons but when cutting out felt letters today I decided to go rouge and feature a CF4L in my Etsy featured items. Enjoy.

It's been about 2 weeks since I arranged my shop this way with the apron letters spelling CF4L. And today, Christmas came early. My submission was selected as one of 32 entries to possibly win some sort of awesomely inappropriate prize.So feel free to vote for my entry HERE.

Adventures in Fabric Dying (note to self :: get gloves)

I think that I just opened Pandora's Box.

Never, ever in all my years have I dyed my own - anything. (Okay- I did dye my hair with a bold teal streak last summer but it was too much maintenance to keep up with.) I didn't do tye-dye at home, school or camp. No Home Ec projects, no College-Art-School experiments. So this is completely uncharted territory for me.

I bought a boatload of plain white onesies last night to make more of the Tiny Acorn tees. I love white, but more importantly- I LOVE COLOR! So I decided to try dying my own fabric. There's an AC Moore right down the street from my house, so while Lilly was in camp today, I went over to see what dye options existed. I only knew of those Rit boxes that look kinda like Jell-o. But surprisingly enough- they didn't carry them- AT ALL! They had a Tulip pre-mixed dye that you had to use in the washing machine. We have a front loader so this option would not work for me. The other choice was a Tulip powder. So I decided to give that a shot.

Teal dye...I sense a theme with my dye choices.

I decided to follow the directions on the package vs. trolling the internet for reviews and work-arounds. I figured - it will either work- or be an epic fail. So the first thing I did was boil a gallon of water. The package said to use STEAMING water, and well- boiling is the only was I really know how to get water that hot.

So to my steaming hot water I added 1/4 cup of salt and the contents of the packet. Stirred it around and hoped for the best as I dipped the first onesie in. It was really hard to tell what color the dye bath was, so it wasn't until the white onesie went in that I saw it was more of a blue/turquoise than a "teal". Oh well... the color wasn't what I expected...could be worse- right? So I decided to add and 2nd onesie. One of the downfalls of this method is that I could only dye 2 onesies at a time. Maybe 3 if they were really small.

It said to stir for constantly for15 minutes and then occasionally for 30 minutes. So I kinda stirred for 5 minutes, and then here and there for 10 minutes and then a few times over the next 30 minutes. Overall I was pretty impressed by how the color took. I was nervous that it might be spotty or streaky or too light or too dark. But it kinda just sat there and turned a really great solid color. I'm sure using a brand new white cotton garment was helpful. I can see how the dye might be spotty if it was a blend material or something that has been washed or stained a lot.

After the 45 minutes was up I realized that I should be wearing gloves. And an apron. Luckily I have LOTS of aprons. But no gloves. I carefully scooped the onesies out and started rinsing them in our stainless steel sink under cold running water. The dye came out really clean after just a few minutes. The pot of dye water was still hot, so I decided to grab 2 more onesies and see what would happen with a 2nd dye lot.

Overall- I was THRILLED with the results. The first 2 onesies came out identical in color. The second two were different styles so they came out slightly different in color and were a tad lighter in hue than the first lot. Right now all 4 onesies are in the washing machine, getting an extra good wash and rinse. I would not recommend this method if you need consistency in color. It seems like there are numerous factors that could affect the dye outcome. But for me, to offer one of a kind appliqued tees - this is PERFECT! I can't wait to a) buy more dye and b) make some more onesies

I needed a little change from sewing everyday, so I made up about 2 dozen of these sweet onesies and tees. Although applique is one of my side passions, I had never tried using textile paint. But after a little trial, and a little more error...I think a new obsession is starting!!! Each one features handstamped text and applique in felt and fabric with a tiny bit of hand embroidery. All the pieces I created are one of a kind and available for purchase in my Etsy Shop.

This design is based on a watercolor painting I created for my daughter's Pre-K teacher.

Fab Find - Lil Blue Boo Pieced Tunic Pattern

Oh. my. word. I don't even know where to begin!!!!!

I came across this pattern from Lil Blue Boo few weeks ago and it jostled something within me. Unfortunately I did not bookmark the page and yesterday when the inspiration hit an all time high, I could not for the life of me remember where I saw the pattern. So I scoured through my internet browser history... to not avail. So then I started google-ing crazy search terms...until I found it. And when I found it- I bought it. (and it's only $12 what a steal!!!) And after I bought it, I immediately printed it.

Okay- so back in the day - September 1992, I saw the most amazing concert of my entire life. U2 Zoo TV. It was at Busch Stadium in St. Louis and I was a Freshman in High School. So being a young, hip "alternative" type teenager I bought my concert tee and wore it dotingly for years. And then I went away to college and packed it away, saving it for another time. And I saved it - for 19 years. (!!!) I had been thinking about what to do with these few bits and pieces of my younger years, and when I saw this pattern from Lil Blue Boo, I KNEW this is why I had been saving this shirt for all those years.

On to the pattern.... this pattern is 1. EASY , 2. VERSATILE, 3. AWESOME! All of the directions are very clear and explained in a practical way so anyone with basic sewing skills can follow. The pattern templates are fabulous- with numbered dots to align the 8.5" x 11" printed pages to create the 3 larger pattern pieces for the tunic pattern. The sizing is very accurate, and allows for endless modifications.

I decided to go with a size medium pattern- which is for chest measurements up to 36". Its a perfect fit- snug but not tight. I may add about 1" another time to try a more roomy/"flowy" top. I decided on some coordinating tshirts from our pile of "clothes to donate", including a Tommy Bahama shirt that was my husbands. I will say this- the mens shirts worked well for the larger "bottom pieces", because I could use 1 entire piece. Once I had all the pieces cut out, it was a simple feed through my 4-thread serger. The only issue I had was the material I used for the neck and arm trim. I was SUPPOSED to use something with stretch, but I REALLY wanted to use the burnt orange color from the tee I used on the bottom back. It was just a regular cotton jersey - no stretch. So I had to MacGuyver the neck trim by ruching into a v-neck...which came out PERFECT in the end! I shortened the tank by a few inches and serged along the bottom hem.

I CAN NOT WAIT to try out some other variations. I think using some lighter weight / stretch jersey will be a better material to work with (duh- like the pattern says), but in the end there is NOTHING I would change about my re-do U2 tee. Thank you, thank you, thank you - Lil Blue Boo!!!

{I think} I can cook - Strawberry "Surprise" Trifle

I can't really take a lot of credit for this recipe.

Okay. I can't take ANY credit for this recipe. This is something that my mom has probably been making for 30 or 40 years. It has a trifecta of summer goodness - berries, cool whip and rum (that's the "surprise").

I remember as a kid having this during the summers...of course made without the rum "surprise". I have no idea what she called this concoction...maybe she called it Strawberry Surprise, maybe I started calling it that, but it really doesn't matter. One of the great things about it is there's the potential for NO cooking involved (which translates to no screwing this recipe up). Here's what it looks like:


Oh sweet berry goodness.

I must say this first- I NEVER put raspberries on the top. It's always been just straight up strawberries. But the raspberries looked REALLY good, and the strawberries looked kinda iffy, so I went with 1/2 raspberries and 1/2 strawberries. You can of course use any sort of berry, or combination of berries.

What you need:
Trifle Bowl - the one I have is from Crate and Barrel
Angel Food Cake - either baked at home or from the grocery store. Grocery store bought = no cooking involved.
Cool Whip (8oz container)
2 containers of Strawberries (or any other berries)
Rum

How you make it:
Bake or buy your Angel Food Cake. Remove it from the pan.

Clean and slice your strawberries. Cut the strawberries in 1/4. (or maybe smaller if you have giant berries).

Slice the Angel Food Cake in 1/3 sections with a serrated knife. Take each of the 1/3 sections and cut in 1/3 through the middle - like 1" from the bottom and then 1" from the top, so you'll have three 1" slices. You should have 9 pieces of cake that resemble a "C".

Take 2 slices and layer in the bottom of your trifle bowl. You will need to cut a small piece of cake from a 3rd slice to finish the layer.

Drizzle some rum on top of the cake layer.

Rum I brought back from USVI.

Use 1/3 of the cool whip and spread across the cake layer. Take some handfulls of berries and layer on top of the cool whip.

Repeat the cake, rum, cool whip and berry layers until you get to the top of the bowl. You should have about 3 layers of cake, 3 layers of rum drizzle, 3 layers of cool whip, and 3 layers of berries. For this particular trifle I put raspberries on the top. I also had about 1 slice of cake left over. There's no "pretty" way of serving this, so I usually just scoop it out with a big serving spoon.

This past 4th of July weekend I went back to visit my hometown of St. Louis, Mo. While I was there I stopped by one of my favorite "midwest" stores- Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby is like the craft mecca. Why we don't have one in the Greater Philadelphia Area is beyond me. (You hear me, Hobby Lobby???) They have some really great fabrics, many of which I don't regularly see in the fabric shops around me. So I picked up a few yards of this, a few yards of that and ended up with a shopping basket overflowing with random bits of craftiness.

DIY - Sewing Machine Cone Thread Conversion

I am going to let you in one my #1 trick of the trade. I have no idea HOW IN THE WORLD I came up with this, but it works, I have been using this technique for years, and I swear by it.

One of my biggest pet peeves when sewing is thread. More speficically the a) expense and b) always running out. My dream is to invent a never ending bobbin for straight stitch machines. It seems like I am winding bobbins endlessly, and running out at the most annoying times. Sergers are great because they sew forever before having to change the thread. So I came up with this trick for machines that have a vertical thread holder (technically called a spool pin). This machine pictured has both a horizontal spool pin (on the right) and a vertical one that's actually a removable "accessory" on the left. The vertical one is technically just for bobbin winding and double needle stitching, but for me it's my primary spool pin. So here is how I convert my straight stitch machine for cone threads:

1. spool pins, this conversion only works on vertical pins

2. place an empty 125 yd thread spool on the vertical pin

3. put the cone over the empty spool


4. optional - *see notes below

5. thread machine as instructed

6. ta-da! You are ready to sew!

Okay- all machines are different and I have step #4 pictured but you may or may not need/want to do it. I do this step on THIS machine because of where the vertical spool pin is (kinda in the middle of the machine). It is very close to the upper thread guide, and I have found that I need some extra tension and space so the thread doesn't get all caught up in the spool pin. So I take the thread and pull it to the far right, so it goes around the outside side of my bobbin winder guide and I pull the thread back across and then thread my machine like instructed. This makes the thread feed mimic the set up of the horizontal spool pin... you know- the one I never use! There's no guide or anything for the thread when I put it on the bobbin guide but I have found this works really great for me. I have a different machine where the vertical spool pin is on the far right side and I don't need to do anything "makeshift" when threading that particular machine. My best advice is to play around with this technique and see what works for you. The cone thread will spin around the small empty spool, which basically acts like a holder for the cone.

A few months ago friends of ours welcomed a baby boy - Kellen - to their family. At 28 week's in utero, Doctors learned that Kellen had a rare heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. This basically means that the left side of his heart is severely underdeveloped and cannot function outside of the womb. No one knows what causes it but sadly it is the rarest congenital heart defect in newborns. (Out of the 40,000 babies born each year with a CHD, only 16 have HLHS).

It cannot be "fixed" but through surgical intervention his heart will be able to function somewhat normally by redesigning the right side to also take over the job of the left side. This requires a 3 stage open heart surgery for him to survive, and the first was done at just two days old. The next surgery is scheduled at 5 months old, and the third between ages 2 and 4. There is a possibility that he will also need a heart transplant in the future.

Kellen is incredibly fortunate to have access to the amazing doctors at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). It's one of those places that you are glad is there, but you never want a reason to go there. And if you have to go there, you never want it to be your "home away from home". And if it turns into your "home away from home" the only thing you wish for when you walk through their doors is to have your child walk out with you.

Kellen has a very long road ahead of him, but he will have something very cool to keep track of the journey. He has a Beads of Courage lanyard. Every test, procedure, appointment- he gets a bead. And those beads add up- at only 5 months old he has over 100 beads! The beads are used to tell the story of his treatment. It gives children something tangible, it helps them cope and it is evidence of their strength. Kellen will be earning some more beads in the upcoming weeks as he goes back to CHOP for his second open heart surgery.

Kellen's mama asked me to help out some of the Cardiac patients at CHOP. Turns out- many kids don't have bags to store their bead lanyards! Some of these kids have so many beads that they can wrap their necklace around several times. She had a GENIUS idea. The Diaper Bag Wrangler Link Loop Diaper Bags would make a perfect Bead Bag! Mama got ahold of some official "Beads of Courage" labels and I sewed them onto 20 of my Link Loop Bags.

I have also made some great friends that share in my addiction of cloth diapering. I have cloth diapered since June on 2004. I am currently cloth diapering #4 of our 6 children. I first purchased one of KC’s wetbags to use on the go with my cloth diapers, which I do and they are super! I have tried several different brands of wetbags over the years. DBW’s is my go to bag I reach for over and over again, it seems to contain the "stink" better than any wetbag I have used! They also the cutest fabric prints out there! After my initial 8 rounds of chemo, I started taking the medication Tamoxifen. Because my breast cancer was Estrogen/Progesterone Receptor + ( or ER/PR+) part of my treatment is 5 years of a hormone BLOCKING therapy. (* note- the word BLOCKING). Basically my body's natural estrogen was causing my cancer to grow, so I need to take a medication to work against that. The first year that I was taking Tamoxifen, I was still getting the Herceptin IVs every 3 weeks for the HER2/Neu protein found in my cancer. About a year later I opted for an Oophorectomy- removal of the ovaries. Even though I was only 31 years old- I was now post-menopausal. I stayed on Tamoxifen after my Oophorectomy, even though Tamoxifen is primarily used in pre-menopausal women. My Oncologist felt that since my body was tolerating it, we should not mess with it. In the year after my Oophorectomy, my body went into revolt. The hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and weight gain went into overdrive! Imagine gong through instant medical menopause and not being able to take anything to alleviate the side effects. Nothing medical, herbal, homeopathic or synthetic And on top of it- you're actually trying to work AGAINST the little amount of hormones left in your body! My doctors tried to find some remedy by adding a (non hormonal) medication to the Tamoxifen. I had moderate relief at first but then it seemed to be getting worse as each month went by. About 1 year later I had enough and asked my Oncologist to switch me to a different estrogen blocking medication.

This medication is used to treat certain types of breast cancer (such as hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer) in women after menopause. Letrozole is also used to help prevent the cancer from returning. Some breast cancers are made to grow faster by a natural hormone called estrogen. Letrozole decreases the amount of estrogen the body makes and helps to slow or reverse the growth of these breast cancers. Letrozole is usually not used in women of childbearing age.

Femara is a teeny tiny pill. Check it out:

My Oncologist talked to me about some of the potential side effects that Femara has. Most common is bone density loss, which can lead to fractures or osteoporosis. Since I am only 32, the whole bone loss issue isn't a large concern for me . It's something that we will just monitor. Like any other medication there's also minor side effects. And what do you know- I have one of them. Joint Pain. JOINT PAIN- from taking this teeny tiny pill!

I remember on chemo there where days when I had the most awful, horrible, crippling bone and joint pain. So severe that I couldn't sign my name. Even now it's almost surreal to think about what I went through. Most people can not comprehend how you can be 30 years old and not be able to walk up stairs. (The best part about documenting my cancer treatment here is that I can go back and read exactly what I was going through. It's not like a memory that I'm recounting and gets distorted over time. It's the real words and pictures from the moment it happened. On bad days (or days I think are bad) I go back and read my posts. it puts a little perspective on things.)

Anyway- back to the Femara joint pain. I started the Femara about 2 months ago. It seemed to alleviate some of the hot flashes and night sweats, and I started to just have "flushing" - like I'd get hot just in my face. It's not a huge improvement, but an improvement nonetheless. About 4 weeks ago or so I started noticing some pain in my shoulders and knees. I honestly forgot about the switch to Femara and thought maybe I pulled something or whatever. About 3 weeks ago I started noticing some MAJOR pain in my knees and hips. I then realized that it was the Femara. 2 weeks ago my THUMBS (yes thumbs) started aching. So once again I am finding myself in pain- having a hard time writing or grasping things. It's becoming a major discomfort to go up steps. And if I'm sitting on the floor and need to get up- forget it.

In addition to the joint pain from the Femara, I am still having the weight gain issues. It's just getting ridiculous now. Never - EVER - in my life did I have trouble staying thin! Between the medications, treatments, surgeries and recovery- the past 2 1/2 years have been brutal. Each time I get into a gym/exercise routine I would have another surgery (or sell 270+ Diaper Bag Wrangler items in 18 hours!). So now that all of that is past- I am trying SO HARD to get back on track.

This new pain is NOT what I want to deal with. Seriously-whyyyyyy!!!!!! I guess the "good news" is that since I started going back to the gym (all of a whopping 3 days so far) my knees don't seem to hurt so much. And I can run 1/2 mile without feeling like I'm going to implode, pass out or puke. Allright- I can run a little more than that but I'm "easing back into it". So I walk 1 mile and run 1/2 mile.

...and of course now that I'm getting back into the gym routine...I'm going leaving for a vacation in 3 days. And there's no treadmill at the hotel.

It's about the journey.

April 2011 - Womens Health - you go girl!!!!

Today she ran in a 5K race with other women who have made the commitment to healthy living. As a gift to her "teammates" Jen gave each of them a headband from our Livestrong Fundraiser Collection. How awesome is that!!!

Seeing the pictures from her 5k today gave me a little kick in the rear. I haven't been to the gym in over a month! So I guess tomorrow will be a "reset button" day for me. I know it's going to suck. But nothing worthwhile is ever easy. And man- it's going to be hard.

My Personal Livestrong Challenge

This August- I will be a THREE year breast cancer survivor.

2011 is also my FIRST cancer free, chemo free and surgery free year since 2008.

So to celebrate I am participating in not ONE, but TWO Livestrong Challenge 5K races. The first is in Philadelphia, PA on August 20, which is 2 days after my personal Survivor Day. The second is in Austin, TX in October.

Looking back on the past two (plus) years, I wish that I could have participated in Livestrong....or another event. My friend Kathie started Team F#@K Cancer in 2009 and participated to honor her husband who lost his battle with cancer. She was kind enough to run in my honor in 2009 and 2010.

This year I am going to run by her side.

I cry each and every time I see this picture.

I created Team F#@K Cancer- East for the Philadelphia, PA Livestrong Challenge. It's the "sister" team of the Team F#@K Cancer based in Austin, TX. This is the year I move past being a "patient" and become a true survivor.

My Team goal is to have 15 members registered for the Philadelphia Challenge and raise $1,500. So far I have 2 members - me and Mike. So that leaves 13 people to recruit. And we have raised $0. How I saved $483 on my Walt Disney World Vacation

A few weeks ago, after about a month of research, I finally "pulled the trigger" and booked our family vacation to Walt Disney World.

I love Disney World.

I don't love the expense.

Now I know why my parents waited until I was a freshman in High School before taking us on our first trip to WDW! I've been to Disneyland twice and Disney World four times. So I guess you could say I'm a "veteran". But we have never stayed in the park. So we decided to "do it up" this trip and "splurge"...well - "splurge" our way.

The most frustrating and overwhelming part of booking a trip to Orlando is the SHEER QUANTITY of hotels, packages and parks available. It's overwhelming, and I can see why so many travel agents specialize in only Disney vacations. But I'm EXTREMELY resourceful and ended up getting a pretty good deal... well, at least in my mind. So here's how I SAVED $483.32 on my Walt Disney World vacation.

#1 - Shopathome.com offers cash back on your online purchases when you sign up for a (free) account. Basically you log into your Shopathome.com account and type in the site search box where you want to shop. You then click through their link and the transaction is recorded in your account. They offer cash back, exclusive coupon codes and promotions to thousands of online retailers. In my case I decided to book our trip through SouthwestVacations.com. At the time of my booking Shopathome.com was offering 6% cash back at SouthwestVacations.com. I also have an account with another cash back site - Ebates.com. I ALWAYS compare the cash back offered with both Ebates and Shopathome before making any online purchase. These are LEGIT cash back websites. Ebates issues you a check quarterly and Shopathome issues you a check when you have a minimum of $20 in your account. I have received cash back checks from both sites over the past year. #2 - Because I was getting 6% cash back, I decided to bundle as much as I could with my SouthwestVacations.com package. They give you the option of purchasing airfare, hotel, Disney park tickets and even the Disney Dining Plan packages among other options. When you book an airfare/hotel package, you can expect to save a little bit. But you can RARELY find discounts on park ticket and dining plans, I figured a 6% cash back "discount" was better than nothing!

#3 - When booking my package I compared the pricing for the 2 promotions that were currently being offered. The first was "% off" at select Disney Resort properties. The other was "kids play free" in which you get FREE child park tickets. At first glance, you'd think the % discount would be greater. But once I priced out the park tickets, it actually came out to be about $100 less to go with the "kids play free" option, and pay "full price" for the hotel.

So here's the pricing breakdown for the exact package, had we just booked it at "FULL PRICE" without booking a package or getting cash back.

Airfare- Southwest Airlines

Hotel - 4 nights, 5 days at Port Orleans - French Quarter in a "Standard" room:

Park Tickets - 3 day Base Ticket, no Park Hopper

Disney Dining Plan- 4 Nights (peak season pricing)

Total Price: $2898.30

And here's what I paid:

PLUS subtract the 6% cash back from Shopathome.com = (- $142.24)

I SAVED : $483.32

I hope that my cash back shopping tips help get a little bit of extra money back in your pockets. It's a small amount of extra effort to check for the cash back percentages. There have been a few time where one site offers cash back, and the other one does not for a certain retailer. Or maybe one site has a significant difference in the percentage you get back. But in my mind, every penny I can save is money we can use for something else. Happy "cash back" shopping!!!

When asked to write a blog post about 5 Fabulous Bloggers, I thought "No Problem! This will be so easy!" And it was.... in fact, it was SO EASY to think of bloggers that are fabulous that this exercise quickly became VERY DIFFICULT as I tried to pare the list down to JUST 5 people to highlight. In this world of new media and blogging that Sarah and I love and are so immersed in, you can easily find fabulous people to read, interact with, and be inspired by.

I decided to narrow my list down by featuring local bloggers here in the Philly Burbs, since ya' know, that's what we do here at Philly Burb Moms! So without further ado... I give you my "Fab 5" list:

1. The first blogger I want to highlight is Jo-Lynne Shane. Aside from wanting to be just like Jo-Lynne when I grow up, I think she is a true gift to the blogging community. As I've gotten to know Jo-Lynne personally over the last 2 years or so, I've been so inspired by her journey to eat local whole foods and introduce these foods in interesting ways to her family. She's documented alot about that journey on her personal blog, Musings of a Housewife, and that birthed a passion inside Jo-Lynne to help others along their path to eating more whole foods (myself included).

Jo-Lynne's local resource site, Eat Local Philly, is a dedicated to local whole foods here. You can get all sorts of information on this site from local Farmers Market to Buying Clubs to Restaurants to Wineries, all sorted by county. Genius!

And while we're on the subject of Jo-Lynne, and totally unrelated to local blogging, do me a favor and check out a new venture that Jo-Lynne and our good friend Melissa from Girlymama are about to launch any second now ...... All Things Chic!

2. Here in the western Philly suburbs, we have another fantastic resource for foodies (from amateurs to pros) .... The Town Dish. Started by Mary Bigham, The Town Dish suite of sites are dedicated to thoroughly covering the all things food in Chester County. The Dish sites include West Chester Dish, Downingtown Dish, Phoenixville Dish and the recently launched Exton Dish. You'd think that 4 foodie blogs might keep Mary and her team too busy to think about other endeavors, but you'd be wrong. While she is very busy making sure her sites are always "delicious", she has big plans for 2011. There will be at least 3 more Dish sites launched this year AND she will be busy with her Dish Trip travels, where she visits a variety of U.S. cities to experience and document their culinary delights!

Whether you live in Chester County or you just want to try out some new restaurants, festivals, and all other food fun, take a peek at The Town Dish sites, and ENJOY!

3. This next woman inspires me whether you know her "story" or not. She is just a go-getter with what seems to be to be boundless creative energy. K.C. Agneta is a Montgomery County mother who runs a business called The Diaper Bag Wrangler where she designs and sells high-quality baby products such as link loop diaper bags, changing pads and zippered wet bags. She also has a wildly successful line of Toddler, Kid and Adult size personalized aprons. We have several of K.C.'s products in our home and have given them as gifts time and time again. She uses beautiful fabrics and trims but yet keeps reasonable price points.

Her blog on The Diaper Bag Wrangler site is a mish-mash of ramblings about what is going on in her shop, the Etsy treasuries she being featured in, the P.F. Chang - inspired Lettuce Wraps that she is making for dinner, and her all out war with breast cancer. In 2008, K.C. was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, had a double mastectomy 2 weeks later and immediately started chemotherapy after that. K.C. did not stop mothering her young daughter, K.C. did not shut down her website or stop selling her products. K.C. boldly and strongly stood in the face of cancer and she never complained. K.C. has the most amazing attitude and resiliency that I have ever witnesses and I am happy that I can say that I know this woman. After she courageously battled her way to health and went through re-constructive surgery, K.C is a model for living life after cancer (to it's fullest).

4. I'm going to bend the "rules" a little bit on this one. I'd love to highlight a blogger with forward-thinking ideas on new media, interacting with your local community and local blogging. She does have a hyper-local site, just not here in Philly :-) I'd like you to meet Sarah Pinnix. Sarah is the founder of High Country Mom Squad as well as her personal site, Real Life Blog. High Country Mom Squad is an e-zine packed with all sorts of lifestyle information for Moms in the Boone, NC area to enjoy and take advantage of. In addition to her sites, Sarah's wisdom on using new media for small businesses is being shared via her Talk of the Town Workshops and she provides individual consulting for small business in her local area as well as large brands. I've been impressed with Sarah's philosophies and love her openness and willing to share. She is my social media "crush" (what, we all have them, right?) and I'd love to collaborate with her on a project in the near future!

5. My final pick is to highlight a blogger that is located here in the local area, but is by no means a local blogger. Since Colleen Padilla burst onto the blogging scene 5 years ago, her career path in new media has continued to skyrocket each year. Colleen's site, Classy Mommy, is a widely read review site for Moms wanting the very best products for their children. I love Colleen's candid feedback and natural writing and vlogging style. You'll enjoy getting to know her and her two amazing children as you read/watch along with them. Colleen has also been a brand advocate for several large companies in the US, she is a trusted social media consultant and has been sought after by news organizations to give her commentary on new media. Colleen is working on a book right now with her partner Audrey McClellan from Mom Generations that is due to be out later this year.

The best part about Colleen is her willingness to help her fellow bloggers and entrepreneurs. In their pre-motherhood careers, Colleen and my business partner Sarah were co-workers and friends. As Sarah would talk to Colleen about the launch of Chester County Moms, or the Holiday Extravaganza, or other ideas we had for the Philly Burb Moms sites, Colleen has always provided advice, support, encouragement and help along the way, and for that we are very grateful.

Pay it Forward- for our Mail Carriers

My friend Caitlin (from Caitlin Domanico Photography and Baby in the Kitchen) had a great idea today. Treat Your Mail Carrier to Hot Chocolate. She thought about this on a whim and made a Facebook Event to see how many people would do it and where they are from. I LOVED the idea and quickly grabbed a few bucks, and wrote a little note on an envelope. I put on my sweatshirt, down coat, boots, gloves and hat. As I walked in the Winter Wonderland developing in my front yard to our mailbox, I thought about our USPS Mail Carriers who spend their days in rain, snow and heat delivering our letters, magazines and packages. I had a smile on my face as I put my envelope in our mailbox, knowing that this tiny gesture would put a smile on my Mail Carriers face, knowing that we appreciate his dedication, especially on days like today when the snow is unrelenting and piling up quickly.

So tomorrow, or whenever you have a chance. Pay it forward and join in!

{I think} I can cook - PF Chang's Lettuce Wraps

Let me just preface this post by stating that I TRY to cook. I watch Top Chef and other cooking shows in awe. I accept that I'm not gifted in the kitchen. Any time I make a new recipe, my family knows one of the following things will most likely happen: 1) I will leave out a (very important) ingredient, 2) I will drop it on the floor, 3) it will be either undercooked or overcooked. However- when I do find a recipe that works out for me, it's usually AWESOME. Tonight's recipe success has set the bar high- VERY high. Tonight I attempted to (re)create PF Changs Lettuce Wraps.

The Real Deal- from PF Chang's

A few years ago, I purchased Todd Wilbur's Top Secret Recipes cookbook from QVC. This recipe was in the cookbook, so I can in no way take credit for it. I can however state that I made some changes to the recipe, which I will note below.

Special Sauce Ingredients:
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon sesame oil
1 - 3 teaspoons chinese hot mustard (1 for for mild, 2 for medium, 3 for hot)
1 - 3 teaspoons garlic chili sauce (1 for for mild, 2 for medium, 3 for hot)

Stir Fry Sauce Ingredients:
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon rice vinegar

Other Ingredients:
3 tablespoons vegetable oil (* I used canola oil)
2 boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 cup (8oz) canned water chestnuts - diced
2/3 cup canned straw mushrooms - diced (* I omitted this)
3 tablespoons chopped green onion (* I forgot to buy this so I used some Tastefully Simple Spinach & Herb Dip Mix instead)
1 teaspoon minced garlic (1 clove) (* I totally forgot to add this)
1 cup fried maifun rice sticks (* I omitted this)
iceberg lettuce head
(* I also added 2 handfuls of cashews, and made a side of brown rice)

1. Mix the Special Sauce - combine all the Special Sauce ingredients in a small bowl and refrigerate.

2. Mix the Stir Fry Sauce - combine all the Stir Fry Sauce ingredients in a small bowl.

3. In a wok or large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil on high heat, saute the chicken breats about 4-5 minutes each side and remove from the pan. Let it cool a bit and then chop into dime sized chunks.

4. Add 1 tablespoon oil to the pan and then add the chicken chunks, diced chestnuts, diced mushrooms, garlic, green onion and stir fry sauce. Saute for about 4 minutes and serve atop the fried maifun noodles.

5. Cut the lettuce head in 1/2 and pull apart leaves for the wraps.

6. Assemble the wraps and spoon the Special Sauce on top. Eat like a taco.

Lilly has become quite demanding when it comes to the music being played in the car. I bought her a Laurie Berkner CD about a year ago and we LITERALLY have listened to the SAME CD every day. Over and over and over. I bought one of those MP3 FM transmitter thingy-s a while ago and it sucks.

My tolerance of "Rocketship Run" is getting increasingly smaller.
So I devised a plan.

Today I bought one of these:

It's a portable MP3 speaker.
And it's going in my car.

The guy at Staples looked at me like I was insane when I told home what I was doing when he tried to up-sell me a "fancier" speaker.

I immediately downloaded the entire Laurie Berkner library from Rhapsody.

FINALLY. I am 100% finished my breast reconstruction surgery.

It all started in January when I had my tissue expander implantation surgery. Then I had saline injections to stretch my skin over the course of 3 months. In April I had the implant exchange and got my NEW silicone boobs. Then 12 days ago I went in for the last step. Nipple reconstruction.

When I originally met with my plastic surgeon, I expressed my indifference towards having nipple reconstruction. I truly didn't care whatsoever if I had nipples or did not have nipples. I was definitely leaning more towards NOT having nipples. I was thinking about all the tank tops and dresses that I could wear with no "nippage". Then a few things happened that changed my mind.

1. I realized that my daughter and I would not look the same if I did not have nipples and she did. I never want her to think that SHE'S the different one. It's hard enough trying to explain what I have gone through to a 4 year old. We always tried to minimize my treatment and surgeries. But Lilly is getting older, and more inquisitive, and more demanding with wanting answers. So in essence, I decided to have nipple reconstruction for my daughter.

2. What sealed the deal was this- after my implants I went to Nordstrom to get my first new bra. The lovely girl assisting me brought a handful of bras, and like any professional bra fitter, they really assist you in the dressing room. I felt OBLIGATED to warn her that I did not have nipples. She wasn't weirded out, and I'm sure I was not the first nipple-less customer, but I didn't want to feel like I had to forewarn anyone for the rest of my life. After my mastectomy, I always told the x-ray tech, or a nurse who I didn't know that I had a mastectomy. I'm not sure why I did, I guess so they were prepared or to make it more comfortable for the both of us. But now I had "normal looking" boobs, but no nipples.

So I told my plastic surgeon that I was on board to have nipple reconstruction. He was GIDDY. Yes- giddy. I made his day. Seriously. You see, my surgeon is so incredibly passionate about his craft that it was almost INSULTING to him that I did not want to "get the whole package". He was very happy that I changed my mind. He told me that we could schedule the surgery whenever I wanted to do it. I decided to enjoy the summer- hang out at the pool and go to the beach, and not worry about surgery or recovery.

You're probably curious about HOW nipples are reconstructed. Well, you know me- I'll tell you. Let me just preface with this. Not all plastic surgeons use the same technique. So I will tell you how MY nipples are reconstructed. Skin is grafted from the "groin fold" - that's a classy name for the skin of your upper inner thigh, waaaaay upper inner thigh. You know where your underwear elastic is- THAT'S your groin fold. So on both "groin folds" skin will be taken and then magically transformed into areola. Then more skin will be taken and magically transformed into nipples. Then then new areola and nipples will be attached to my boobs.

September 14th rolled around and it was MY SURGERY DAY. I was feeling very indifferent about it. It was the final step, and if anything I was more worried about the "what now?" feelings. It had been 25 months since my initial diagnosis. Was I ready to LET GO? I was never the type of person who was obsessive with my cancer. It was there, treated and gone. Well, not that simple, but I didn't let it consume me. BUT- it was a HUGE part of my life. And now this was the last thing to do.

My surgery was scheduled for 11:30am. We had to be at the Outpatient Surgery Center at 10:15am. I checked in and was called back to the "holding area". One of the few upsides to having so many surgeries- you get to know the staff- the nurses, surgeons, anesthesiologists. So it was nice to see the same staff was working today that was there my last visit. I was given a tote bag with my "gear"- gown, booties and cap. I got changed and settled in my little gurney area.

All the nurses and doctors came by to get me prepped. The nurse was unable to get my IV going, so the anesthesiologist was brought in and worked his magic. My surgeon was running late (WOW- BIG surprise there!) and about 12:30pm he came in to talk to me and mark me up. I was pretty adamant that Mike give his input to the nipples/placement. I actually got a set of silicone stick on nipples that I spent 2 hours playing with the night before, attempting to find the right placement. With the aid of my family, I think the best spot was determined so I left them on for my surgeon to see.
He got a little kick out of it. But it was more for me than for him. I wanted to have a *little* control. For so long everything was out of my hands. I just went with the flow and allowed people to poke me, inject me with poison, remove my breasts and ovaries. Everything was done to LIVE. So something as minuscule as nipples- I wanted to try and have some control. My surgeon marked around the silicone areola with his black sharpie, measured me with his handy little tape measure and then- the marking REALLY began.

In addition to my nipple reconstruction, I was getting a fat graft. AKA- Liposuction. You see, I had a major indentation in my right armpit from my lymph node dissection. The original plan was to do lipo when I did my implant exchange in April, but my plastic surgeon did a "game day switch" and said- "hey, let's just put in a bigger implant". So we did, and he released all the skin in the armpit area but it really made no difference. Basically the plan was to take fat from either my hips or stomach and inject it into my armpit. There were no promises that it would work 100% but he felt confidant that it would make some improvement. When he started marking me for lipo,he did me the BIGGEST solid ever- he marked BOTH my hips and stomach. I would just like to point out right now that this was a MEDICAL procedure not a COSMETIC procedure. There was not a lot of fat sucking to be done- just enough to suck out and inject.

After I was all marked up and ready to go, I had a mild freak out. Just about the finality of everything. It had been such a long journey, and for it to be ending.... it's just a lot of emotion to face. My surgeon was very patient and comforting. He stayed with me and Mike and held my hand. When I finally stopped crying I said- ok, I'm ready- let's do this. I gave Mike a big kiss and got wheeled to the OR.

And then I woke up in the recovery room.

Ahh- all the delights of post-anesthesia. Torn up throat, itching from head to toe, can't keep my eyes open, nausea, puking, can't pee. And the crazy thing- they pretty much walk you out the door and send you on your way. I really don't remember anything. I was so completely out of it. The pain and discomfort was in full force. My nurse told me to "keep my legs together so I didn't rip my stitches". I had a girdle on from below my boobs to my hips. I couldn't move! I "slept" the entire ride home, and once we got back home I went straight to bed. Mike came in around 9pm and told me that my surgeon had called and yelled at me to get out of bed. So I did.

I had a chance to evaluate my procedure. My "groin fold" looked like a c-section had occurred, 4" incisions on both sides, sutured up and then covered in steri-strips. My boobs were covered in gauze tape, but there were little "windows" cut out for my nipples. I can't really see anything- it just looks like bloody skin. My stomach and hips are throbbing, bruised and hmmmm....dare I say - flat. My armpit looks- WONDERFUL.

I have been wearing spanx, anti-embolism thigh high circulation stockings, a compression girdle and my bandages 24/7. It would take me 15 minutes to go to the bathroom- just trying to pull the spanx on and off, daintily as possible so I didn't irritate my stomach, hips or groin. And then I find out the worst news- my surgeon is going on VACATION! What- I have to wait 2 weeks to get THIS STUFF OFF! Well, it's not that bad.... I was able to take off the circulation stockings by Thursday. On Friday I took off the compression girdle. I was probably not supposed to but the spanx seemed to be doing a really good job and were much more flexible. Each day got better. I was still uncomfortable from the lipo. That was the most painful. My boobs have no feeling so I was lucky not to have any pain there. My "groin fold" was healing and by the weekend I felt much better. I actually drove on Sunday.

Now it's about 12 days post surgery. I'm still bruised but it's finally fading. My "groin fold" steri-strips have peeled off. My boob bandages are FUNKY. The top layer has lost all adhesive tackiness and are starting to fall off. I tried to put a layer of medical tape across the top today but it's so gross that the tape isn't even sticking very well to the gauze bandages. The bottom layer has permanently bonded with my skin and I'm terrified to have it peeled off. Mike told me that I smell. Yea- no kidding. I wash my hair leaning over the bathtub and wipe off my arms with a washcloth. I can use the sprayer on my legs, but I couldn't get my incision site wet until just a few days ago. It ROYALLY sucks.

I still have 2 more days to go until I see my surgeon for the follow up. I'm curious to see how my new nipples look. I'm sure I'll have another "freak out" but I need to remember that I'm still healing and I need to just give it time.

Review: Diaper Bag Wrangler Changing Pad

There's a beautiful diapering accessory at Mami's and Papi's online store...not easily noticed, but it deserves some love! The Diaper Bag Wrangler (DBW) has several handmade items available at Mami's and Papi's (even a few exclusive's!), and the changing pad is just one of them.

The DBW changing pad measures approximately 22" by 17" in length - a perfect size. It has a beautiful cotton print on one side and a super-soft unbleached organic cotton as the reverse. The first thing I noticed about it was how vibrant the colors are on the cotton print - the pictures do not do it justice! The second thing I noticed was how nicely it was made. The fabrics are substantial, not thin, and of course it's washable!

I would hate for this to be limited as just a changing pad. Around here it's been miserably hot and humid. At the suggestion of a friend, I folded the two sides in and lined our seat with it, and it helps wick the moisture away. As an added bonus, our carseat got a facelift! With Fall just around the corner in the Midwest, it would also be nice to have the flannel side facing out.

Not pictured are it's use as a baby lap blanket in the infant carseat during a recent unseasonably cold weekend, and as a blanket for my 1 1/2 year old's dolly. My only problem is figuring out which way to use it - good thing it's washable!

I would love to see an option for a second generation changing pad with a layer of PUL sewn in! I would call it "not-just-a-changing pad"

Fall has arrived here in New England which means time to start baking! Adeline and I love warming up the house by baking together and now she has a super cute apron to wear while we do it, thanks to The Diaper Bag Wrangler. In 2006, SAHM K.C. Agneta started by making small bags for diapers and wipes. It has since evolved to include a variety of diaper bags, headbands and aprons for kids and adults. Each item is handmade by K.C. in her home. The apron we received for review is personalized with a hand embroidered felt letter A for Adeline on a bright floral patter with hot print pockets and trim in 100% cotton.

One of my favorite parts of the apron is the adjustable D-ring neck. I have seen so many aprons that tie at the neck but the d-ring seems so much more practical and easy to adjust! The kids aprons are sized to fit kids age 2-6 and are reversible as well as machine washable (thankfully)! You can choose from many different patterns and even get matching mommy and child aprons or child and doll aprons! They are also available in big kid sized 6-tween. Adeline was so excited to get her apron on and help me with dinner.

Week 1 Weight Loss Update

So it's been 1 week of "Plan B" weight loss/healthy eating/feeling good. I haven't been a real stickler on the whole "diet" thing- because I am NOT on a diet. I just want to FEEL good about my body.

Beginning stats:
144 lbs
33" waist (across my bellybutton)
40" hips
24" upper thigh

1 Week later:
142 lbs
33" waist
39.5" hips
24" upper thigh

So- not much has changed, but I did lose 2 lbs. And losing 2 is better than gaining 2!

I played around with the Herbalife shakes and figured what I like the taste/texture of best. So here's my general recipe:

8 oz juice - either orange, apple, pineapple this week
2 scoops Berry Healthy Meal Powder
1 scoop Vanilla Protein Powder
2-3 spoonfuls of yogurt (plain or if I use a flavor yogurt then I don't add fruit)
handful of frozen fruit - strawberries or blackberries this week
handful of ice (like 3-4 ice cubes)

So every morning for breakfast I have a shake (more like a smoothie). And almost every day for lunch I've had one too, but I add a wedge of Laughing Cow Lite cheese and some pita crackers. (155 calories for the cheese/crackers). I think one day this week I made a sandwich. I have been careful about snacking and portions. I am more selective about what food I buy. I figured if there's no junk food in the house, I won't be as tempted to snack.

I walked 3 miles on the treadmill yesterday. That was the only day I got to the gym last week. This coming week I expect to see a little more weight loss since Lilly is back in school and I plan to go straight to the gym after I take her to school.

So that's my update, and so far 2 of my friends and Mike have tried my "smoothie concoctions" and were quite impressed.

Ugh....where to start.....A long time ago, before having a baby, before having cancer - I was skinny. Like a size 2/4 skinny.

Then I got pregnant- I gained 32 lbs.

After Lilly came, I was able to maintain my weight and was a happy size 6.

Then I mysteriously shrunk to a size 4.

Ahhh- cancer was eating away at my body. During my treatment I took lots and lots of medications, including steroids to keep my appetite up.

So here I am now.

I don't feel fat. I don't look fat. But I don't feel comfortable. As it turns out breast cancer survivors tend to have "weight issues". Mix that with early menopause and it's a big, hot mess.

A month ago I got fed up with feeling this way. None of the shorts that I was wearing in JULY fit me anymore. I REFUSED to buy clothes in a size 8. I started going to the gym- regularly. I would drop Lilly off at camp and go straight to the gym. I'd do 20-ish minutes on the treadmill. I had a plan- I'd do 5 minutes of a moderate paced walk, 5 minutes of a brisk walk, 5 minutes of a run, then 5 minutes of a brisk walk. Week 1- I was down 2.5lbs, but I got shin splints so I took it a little easy week 2. By week 3 I was up 1.5 lbs from when I started and had aching knees. This was not going as planned.

Week 4 (last week) Lilly was home- no camp, no school. I attempted to take her to the gym with me once before and it ended in disaster, so I vowed- never again. I *planned* on waking up early and going to the gym before Mike went to work- but yeah- that didn't happen. So I am moving on to PLAN B. I have realized that I need something else. Who I am now is not who I used to be. This is going to take EFFORT. Ugh. Effort.

Today I have started the Herbalife weight loss plan. I don't need to lose a lot of weight but I am not a fabulous eater, and sweets are my pitfall. So I am hoping that this supplement program will help me get back into a happy, healthy and COMFORTABLE body. My *NEW* plan is as follows (and I am hoping that by writing this it's motivation for me to actually DO IT!). Week 1 (this week) - Herbalife shake for breakfast and lunch.

Week 2 (next week) - Lilly starts school, so I can easily get back to the gym. Herbalife shake for breakfast, gym 5 days a week.

Week 4 - Herbalife shake for breakfast and maybe lunch until I am recovered and can go back to the gym.

Week 5+ - Herbalife shake for breakfast, gym 5 days a week.

So here's my "stats" today:
144 lbs
33" waist (across my bellybutton)
40" hips
24" upper thigh

I will keep you posted on my process. Just want to be fair though- I am having liposuction on the 14th as part of a fat graft procedure for my final stage of breast reconstruction. He's not taking a lot, but I am hoping to lose a little "extra" around the middle. :)

Happy Survivor Day!

August 18th is like a 2nd birthday to me. But instead of presents and birthday cake, I get something better. I get life. On August 18th, 2008 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. On August 18th, 2009 I was almost finished my 15 months of chemotherapy treatment. On August 18th, 2010 I am cured. Granted, I lost a few body parts along the way...but I have learned that you don't really need boobs, nipples, ovaries or fallopian tubes.

So to celebrate being a 2 year breast cancer survivor, we're hosting a Boob-B-Que.

And along with the celebration, we are also raising money for the American Cancer Society. This year we are donating all funds in honor of Mary Ellen Mergenthaler. Mary Ellen was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and passed away just two months later. Mary Ellen and her family were huge supporters of me during my treatment. You might recall the memory quilts I made a few months back- they were for her family.

Tutorial - NO SEW Tutu

Every little girl loves playing dress up in a tutu- here's a super simple version that even kids can make. No sewing involved!

Materials:
1. Goody "ouchless" Adult Size Headband - they come in a multi-pack and can be bought at Target, Giant, Rite-Aid etc.

2. Tulle, ribbon or fabric - I prefer the 6" width tulle that comes in rolls from the craft store. Make sure if you buy ribbon it does NOT have wired edges! (You can make about 1 tutu with one 25 yard roll of tulle.)

3. Scissors

Directions:
1. Determine how long you want the tutu to be

2. Cut strips of tulle/ribbon/fabric 2x the desired length. About 40 cut strips of tulle are needed for a "full" tutu.

3. Tie each strip of tulle/ribbon/fabric in the middle - just by making a knot - all the way along the headband until desired fullness.

Optional Embellishments:
Glue (with Fabri-tac or craft glue) silk flowers or gems to the ends of ribbon

Tips:
These tutus can be completely and totally customized for your child. You can make them really full, or keep it simple. These make great party favors for birthdays, or a cute gift.

Tutorial - Using Applique to Embellish Clothing

Why are BRAND NEW CLOTHES such a MAGNET for spots and stains? It drives me crazy, but by using a simple applique, you can not only cover those stains, but personalize any article of clothing....AND it's easy! Today I am going to show you (in 2 parts) how to use applique to embellish really anything (stained or not!).

Materials Needed:
Clothing (shirt, dress, bag, etc)
Fabric Scrap
Steam a Seam 2 (or other applique adhesive, found at fabric shops)
Iron
Scissors

*Extras-hand sew on buttons or ribbon trims, use decorative stitches with a sewing machine!

Instructions:
1. Cut out rough shape for fabric applique
2. Peel off 1 paper backer of Steam a Seam and press fabric onto adhesive
3. Cut out desired shape (can also use a die cutter machine!)
4. Peel off 2nd paper backer and position applique onto clothing
5. Use hot iron and press for 10-15 seconds (check instructions for exact timing)

Options:
Use zig zag stitch and machine sew along edges of applique
Hand sew on buttons or ribbon bow trims.

OOOOH- I am FIRED UP ABOUT THIS!

It really takes a lot for me to get worked up about things, but I get annoyed - fast- when you try to do the "right thing" and it backfires on you.

I have a small pile of items to return to a certain retail store. (I am not going to name this store, because I have learned in the past that Customer Service people from big companies tend to troll the internet for complaints.) I typically go to this store a few times a month and have honestly forgotten to grab my bag or returns each time. And of course, every time I go there I have that "d'oh" moment when I remind myself to bring the returns - the next time. I never really thought it would have been an issue making a return either, because it is a HUGE nationwide retailer.

So tonight I had to go to this store, and I REMEMBERED my bag o' returns. And of course- I have the receipt for ALL the items I would like to return. The total of all items to be returned is about $35. I was also PURCHASING about $70 worth of stuff too. So at the checkout, the MANAGER was going to ring me up. I told her that "I have a return". And she got all huffy while I organized my items and receipt to make the return. She then looked at my receipt and said, "you can't return these, it's past the 90 day return window", and then she snips- "WHICH IS PRINTED ON THE BACK OF YOUR RECEIPT." So I ask- "can I just EXCHANGE this for a different color?", to which she replies "no".

So here's why I am annoyed. You can make a RETURN WITHOUT A RECEIPT, but you would get your item returned at lowest price during the past 90 days. Could I do that? No, because I "HAD" a receipt. I would HAPPILY have taken the lowest price during the past 90 days! I would be happy just to swap the color! Store credit- I'd spend it in a second! I'm not even asking for my money returned, I just want to exchange! I wasn't trying to return something seasonal, everything I was returning was currently sold in the store!

So what's the point of being an honest shopper? What's the benefit of a return policy that basically refuses returns with a receipt, but allows returns without a receipt? What's preventing me from going back to the store "without my receipt" and making my return tomorrow?

Update: guess who got herself a store credit today.

This past weekend I traveled (SOLO- no husband or child!) to my hometown of St. Louis, Mo. Although my family no longer lives there, I have a gaggle (that's right- I said gaggle) of friends who still live there. So I spent a long 4th of July weekend with my best girlfriend (since 7th grade) Kate. And just like old times, we were all about the shenanigans. Here's a quick recap of our insane weekend.

Friday - I flew to STL, and got picked up by Kate. We immediately head to St. Louis Bread Co (aka Panera Bread for anyone outside of St. Louis). After a late lunch we head to Kate's salon for some funky hair highlights by Lola. I let Lola do whatever, and got some awesome turquoise/teal highlights:

After the salon we head to Kate's house where we meet up with Joe (Kate's husband), and high school friends- Wendy (my cancer buddy who was the most awesome friend during my chemo and treatments) and Josh (my artist buddy, who lives in Baltimore and was in town as well). The 5 of us pile in Wendy's SUV and head to the Cardinal's game. Highlight: Josh's dad works downtown and gave us his parking garage pass = free parking. Josh's dad also drew us a map with turn by turn directions, like we were 16 years old driving to the city for the first time. It was so sweet!n Plus the Cardinals beat up on the Brewers BIG TIME!

After the game, we head where ALL Cardinals fans head: Ted Drewes. I had my favorite- a Terramizzou concrete, which is chocolate frozen custard with pistachio nuts. YUM! Wendy busted out the cars tailgate and we all enjoyed our frosty concretes.

Saturday - Kate and I headed to the Montelle Winery in Augusta, Mo to celebrate the birthday of a friend of Kate's. WOW- this place is amazing. There was about 12 of us and we had a catered luncheon, and wine GALORE! There was a live band and beautiful scenery.

After the Winery, we all headed to Froyo. Froyo is a frozen yogurt/sorbet joint where everything is self serve, with a giant topping bar. After you make your concoction you weigh it and pay per ounce. I enjoyed a 1/2 Mango Tango, 1/2 Pomegranate Raspberry sorbet topped with fresh raspberries and kiwi. HEAVENLY! The wine + froyo required a late afternoon nap.

After "adult naptime" we headed to Club Viva which is a Salsa Club located in the CWE. I was a little intimidated. We missed the 8pm salsa lessons, and the place was pretty empty when we rolled in at 10pm-ish. But by 11pm- OH MAN - it was a Salsa Fiesta! I have never been to a more diverse, friendly and welcoming club - EVER. Highlight: all cocktails were served in pint glasses. WOOOOO!

Sunday - Happy 4th of July!!!! After our late night, we needed some serious food. So we (Kate, Joe and I) went to Pi. I would seriously fly to St. Louis for Pi. We got the delmar – mozzarella, cheddar, barbeque sauce, hormone-free chicken, red and green peppers, red onion, fresh cilantro after baking. (minus the peppers, but added artichokes). It was heaven on pizza crust.

Now in a pizza coma we (me and Kate) headed to the Drury Plaza Hotel. We thought it would be a) smart and b) fun to stay downtown for the 4th of July. Let me say this- I lived in the St. Louis area until I was 18. This place is a MUST for ANYONE traveling to the city, or anyone looking for an overnight stay Downtown. It's directly across from the Courthouse and Arch. Highlight: FOOD. Upon check in, we got 3 cocktail vouchers EACH! There was a hot food buffet happy hour and sodas and popcorn available all night. Although we didn't have a outside view, they had a nice courtyard view for interior rooms.

After the free drinks and snacks we headed across the street to the Arch grounds for Fair St. Louis.

And the main reason we went (aside from the fireworks in front of a national monument) was : The B-52s concert. We somehow scored the reserved seats, about 12 rows back. I don't know how we managed this, the guy just opened the gate and let a group of people in. Lucky us!

And then immediately after we rocked out to Planet Claire, Private Idaho, Roam, Love Shack, Rock Lobster, Wig, Cosmic Thing the fireworks started!

But the night doesn't end there! We then headed to the Landing which was PACKED and finished off the night at The Big Bang- a dueling piano bar. Here's our carnage:

Monday - no trip to St. Louis is complete without a visit to the Zoo. We (me and Kate) picked up Josh (our artist friend) and met our friend Dan and his family there. Highlight: it's free. It was crowded and sweltering hot, but we had a fun time checking out the animals and riding the train.

After the zoo, Kate Josh and I headed to a St. Louis institution- The Pasta House. Highlight: the Pasta House Salad (which no longer comes with unlimited refills, total bummer, but still awesome) and TOASTED RAVIOLI - which I ordered 18, plus a to-go box so I could bring some home.

We had a quick "early dinner" and headed to the airport. I caught my flight home and held back tears as I had to say goodbye to Kate. After 20 years, she's still my soul sister.

Back from vacation

I am too tired to type much, but we just got back from an 11 day trip to Florida. We stayed in Boca Raton with the 'rents, and then Mike and I had a SWEEEET escape to Key West for 4 nights, while Lilly stayed at "camp mom-mom and g-daddy".

In Key West, we stayed at The Waldorf Astoria Reach Resort, and walked to Duval Street every day/night. We ate/drank at Keys Fisheries, Islamorada Fish Co., Salsa Loca, Mangoes, Sarabeths, Cowboy Bill's, Sloppy Joes, Hog's Breath, and Aqua...which has a Drag Queen show....which was HILARIOUS. Mike and I also took a snorkeling day trip to Fort Jefferson at the Dry Tourtugas National Park. It's 70 miles off of Key West and amazing. We saw millions of fish- including a tarpon, parrotfish, a squid (although my mom said she thinks it was a cuddlefish), spiny sea urchin, conch...just to name a few. It was our 3rd time in Key West and it was a great getaway!

I know... how can you be in love with an apron? But I AM! I don't know why but I've had such a hard time finding one. I opened shop in November and have been searching for an apron ever since. I wanted one that would kind of double as a quasi-uniform for various events. BUT I also wanted practical.

If you are anything like me, you go through lots of towels in the kitchen. Either they are sopping wet because you wash your hands so many times or you end up with piles of half used towels because you walk around with them and then they aren't handy when you need them.

Check out what this lady did. She made a half apron with snap on towels!!! I love, love, love it! I also purchased 3 replacement towels so that as I work, I can just replace the towel if I make too big of a mess of it. But now I ALWAYS have a towel handy when I need it! And these are made for REAL women too. Because you know I taste what I make! (wink)

And as a bonus, she also has great tie back headbands to keep your hair back. Which is a requirement in the food industry. So now I have a coordinated look that matches my shop colors and is amazingly practical.

The Boobie Blues

I'm gonna skip ahead a little bit....my last post was all about my breast reconstruction surgery. I am still going to write about the big "unveiling" but I need to talk a little bit about my personal meltdown that occurred this week.

This is my current facebook status:
Dear boobies: I know you're new in town, I'm really trying to be your friend, but you're a lot bigger than my previous set. It's taking me a while to warm up to you. I hope you enjoy the Donna Karan bras and forgive me for hating you yesterday.

So you're probably wondering what happened- right? I have no idea, but I'm slowly processing this wave of emotion which took over my life on Wednesday. At some point during the day I starting obsessing about everything listed below:

1. I don't know how I thought I'd look, but this is not it.
2. what happened to my perfectly round and full "Tori Spelling boobs" that I had when the tissue expanders were in.
3. these boobs do not belong to me...they belong to some fatty-bo-batty woman...not me.
4. why are these implants so wide and flat...I think they might be in sideways.
5. I am a gigantic blob of silicone uni-boob.
6. sports bras are not pretty - and I like pretty, lacy underwire bras.
7. these implants are permanent!
8. what now? no more chemo, no more expander fills, no more cancer?

So amid my hysterics, I got an e-mail (promptly followed by a phone call) by a good friend, neighbor and fellow breast cancer survivor. I was lucky enough to be able to swing by her house to have a cry-out session with someone who KNOWS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL, who WEARS MY SHOES EVERYDAY, and who could just listen and assure me that what I was feeling is normal. And I realized several things.

1. it's only been 5 days post-op.
2. it's only been 48 hours since the surgical bandages came off!
3. I'm bruised and swollen, and have sutures across my breasts.
4. my perspective of looking "down" is WAY different than the perspective of someone looking at me, or looking in the mirror.
5. my implants are memory silicone which needs to relax and be massaged to get their "normal" shape...which will take 3 months.
6. I went from being a 34A before cancer, to having a double mastectomy, to having no breasts for 16 months, to having perfectly round tissue expanders which changed shape every week for 3 months, to having FULL 34C "naturally shaped breast" implants.
7. my implants were specifically selected to fill in the gaping space on my side where the lymph node tumor was removed.
8. Donna Karan Intimates made my day.
9. I can wear pretty, lacy bras...in 4 weeks.
10. it's ok to feel this way.

So that's kinda where I'm at with things. I will say this- my boobs look so much better today than they did on Wednesday. The shape is starting to round out and I know that once the sutures come out and the skin can "relax" they will be even better. And they will soften, and the swelling will go away and the scars will (once again) fade, and I will start to feel more like the "new me".
